RNLI Dunbar - Call-out

RNLI Dunbar Lifeboats

Both Dunbar RNLI lifeboats launched to surfers in difficulty RNLI Dunbar’s two lifeboats launched this afternoon (Sunday 10th March 2024) following a report that five surfers were being swept out to sea at Belhaven Beach.

The alarm was raised at 2.35pm when a concerned member of the public spotted the surfers in difficulty near Belhaven Bridge. The D-class inshore lifeboat (ILB) ‘David Lauder’ launched from Dunbar Harbour at 2.50pm and by the time the volunteer crew were on scene seven minutes later two of the surfers had made it ashore but three were stranded on Belhaven Bridge, which was cut off by the tide. With a four-metre swell and breaking waves onto the bridge, the decision was made not to risk the crew’s safety, as mobile coastguard teams from Dunbar and North Berwick were on scene and able to carry out a water rescue from the shore.

The all-weather lifeboat (ALB) ‘John Neville Taylor’ launched from Torness Power Station at 3.05pm and arrived at Belhaven 15 minutes later. HM Coastguard requested both boats remain on standby, while an ambulance was called, as one of the surfers had suffered an asthma attack.

Using ropes, the coastguard teams began rescuing the remaining surfers from the bridge and by 3.55pm, when the last casualty was safely ashore, both boats had been stood down.

ILB helm Alan Blair said: ‘The caller did the right thing by alerting the Coastguard but, given the conditions it was safer to rescue the surfers from the shore than risk the safety of the volunteers. Thankfully everybody made it to shore safely.’

If you see anything suspicious in or around the water call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

Oldhamstocks Water Supply

Scottish Water has provided the following information:

“The works at Cockit Hat are to inspect and refurbish a treated water storage tank. This tank provides the treated water supplying the village of Oldhamstocks and is inspected and maintained periodically to ensure it is in good condition.

Before beginning the work, the village’s water supply was by-passed. There was an initial issue with the pressure being too high which was remedied by one of our team members.

When there are changes in pressure in the network, this can lead to the issues you have raised.

We advise customers to allow their cold-water kitchen tap to run at a reduced pressure until this runs clear. Do not run any other taps or use any water appliances whilst doing so and follow the same process with any other taps affected once the water is clear from the cold-water kitchen tap.

If customers continue to experience issues, we recommend they contact 0800 0778 778 and we can investigate further.”

Council Changes to Refuse Collection

From 1st April 2024, East Lothian Council will collect the green bins – used for non-recyclable household waste – once every three weeks instead of fortnightly.

The local authority said the change reflected the focus on increased recycling – and stressed that a weekly recycling service would continue to operate throughout the county. It confirmed that a £35 annual charge would be introduced for garden waste (brown bin) uplifts.

Applications for householders to purchase a permit for fortnightly brown bin collections open on April 1 with the new service starting from July. Collection of garden waste is not a statutory service and local authorities have no obligation to collect this. Further details about how to apply for a permit will be issued in due course and the new calendars for collection dates for green bins will be issued to all properties shortly.
